Welcome to the National Foundation To Prevent O.D.D.
The Observational Deficit Disorder!

You may ask yourself, what is ODD?

ODD is the Observational Deficit Disorder!  This ODD Disorder afflicts millions of children every year!  It is a progressive childhood disorder that advances steadily until adulthood!  However, there is hope!  Most children and teens outgrow this debilitating disorder in time!  Also new therapies are being developed every year to aid ODD Parents in coping with this most frustrating disorder!

Warning:  It has recently been discovered that residual symptoms of ODD have been discovered in married men!  Be warned, and watch your husband closely for any ODD behavior.  Should your husband display such ODD behavior, seek professional advice at once.  In rare cases, it may be necessary to institutionalize your husband.

How To Recognize ODDness:

Children and Teens that exhibit ODD behavior manifest the following symptoms:

  • Inability to notice other family members, particularly parents, when walking through a room!
  • Temporary loss of hearing when watching the Simpsons, and MTV, the Cartoon Channel, or other life changing television programs.  Hearing loss may be variable, as adult voices appear to be the most hard to hear.
  • Temporary loss of English fluency - results in misinterpretation of written and spoken directions, as well as the perception that there is no homework.
  • Inability to notice clothes and other debris covering entire bedroom.
  • Inability to notice four foot high pile of towels on floor of bathroom.
  • Inability to notice conflicts in clothing when dressing - particularly true of mixing plaids and stripes.
  • Frequent invisibility of last piece of corn or other vegetable, or other food on plate.
  • The willingness to perform chores around the house, but the inability to actually see the trash can.

There are numerous other manifestations, from flushing challenge, to fridge door closing, to leaving trash.

Additionally, this disorder has a profound affect on short term memory, resulting the loss of recall of recent events, conversations, and the ability to recall other forms of knowledge.

Steps You Can Take:

The ODD child or teen needs reassurance.  You need to remind them of what they are not observing, and have failed to accomplish.  This may be necessary several dozen times!  But take heart, this is not nagging, this is therapeutic!  Only through constant commentary can you gradually aid the ODD child or teen, and in the end they'll thank you for it!

Support for ODD Families:

Unfortunately, there are no support groups or forums for ODD Families.  Most ODD Family members feel uncomfortable discussing their ODDness and that of their family members.  However, whenever you encounter an ODD person - feel free to acknowledge their ODDness by walking on the other side of the street, casting sidelong looks, and generally making your rejection of things ODD known.  Of course you may also walk up to an ODD family member and express your sympathy.

ODD Things To Remember:

As someone afflicted with ODD, they have a disability, and can get the good parking spaces!  You also can get your own bus service under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).  When you go to the store, be sure to get one of those electric shopping carts - just tell them you are ODD and they'll hand one over in a heartbeat!  Airlines also arrange for special seating for ODD people, so next time you fly be sure to ask!  So remember and be sure to exploit your ODDness!
